The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
